How to Hire the Right People
Sometimes finding qualified, reliable staff can be a challenge, so it is important that you have your systems in place to hire and nurture the right people. Guests feel the impact of a poorly staffed business either through poor service and food experiences, or the lack of energy, and positive vibes within the space.
Here are a few tips to ensure you’re going to hire a successful team of people:
Find out why they’re here
When people walk through the door of your business looking for a job, find out why they’re here right off the bat. After they fill out their application, ask them what brought them in and find out what they know about your company. Do they actually want to be a part of your business? Or are they just looking for a job? Hiring people that are genuinely excited about representing your brand and being a part of your team can make all the difference in the world.
Ask the right questions
Avoid asking standard, boring interview questions. When you’re engaging with a potential new hire you want to get a feel for who they really are and not be blindsided later by someone who just interviewed well. Ask intentional questions that will guage their emotional intelligence and help you understand how they think, communicate and problem solve.
Take them on a tour
If you think they’re great, ask them if they’d like a quick tour of your business. There’s no harm in showing a good candidate what your business is all about. Keep an eye out for how they interact during your tour – do they engage, comment or ask questions? Are they respectful of other team members when they are introduced? Do they seem genuinely excited about what your business has to offer?
Conduct a second interview
Always set up a second interview with another team member in your business. Getting a second opinion from people who will also be working alongside them is a plus. It will help you avoid bias and hire people different than yourself. Often it is easy for us to be drawn to people we like and easily get along with but it is important to hire a well rounded group of people that bring different strengths to your business.
Hire for diversity
It is crucial to hire an array of people that will bring different perspectives into your business. This will enhance problem solving, creativity, and communication among your team. Hiring a diverse group of people (different age groups, religions, cultures, interests, genders etc.), will provide an environment where people can learn from one another and contribute to your business in a meaningful way.
